As part of a monthly volunteer initiative, the Claims Department of Warrenville, Illinois participates in various philanthropic events to give back to the community. This month, the group volunteered at a Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) packing site in the nearby city of Aurora, Il.
FMSC is a non-profit organization founded in 1987 to help feed malnourished children around the world. In 2015, the organization relied on more than 1 million volunteers to produce 272 million specially formulated meals, feeding approximately 745,000 children daily.
After arriving at the packing site and participating in a short orientation session, the Warrenville volunteers got to work. The team split into five stations to form a quick and efficient production line. The volunteers prepared the sealable bags, weighed and readied the meal portions, sealed the food into the bags and packed the newly-readied meals into boxes. Additional volunteers helped swap full boxes with empty ones to keep the stations working efficiently.

At the end of the hour and a half shift, the management translated the volunteers’ hard work into tangible numbers: volunteers collectively packed 105 boxes containing a total of 22,680 meals, roughly enough to feed 62 children one meal per day for an entire year. “It’s very rewarding to know that even in one shift, we really did make a difference,” said associate claims counsel Jessica Ladwig. The Warrenville volunteers contributed more than just their time to FMSC. The group also donated a collective $270 to the organization.

Previously, the Claims Department participated in annual philanthropic events with the rest of the Warrenville office. However, many claims employees were eager to volunteer more frequently. “We decided that we wanted to continue giving throughout the year,” said Jessica. Since then, the department has planned and participated in 10 monthly volunteer events.
Thanks to this monthly philanthropy initiative, the recent FMSC shift marks the second time the Claims Department volunteered with the organization. “This event has gotten a great turn out and positive feedback each time,” said Jessica. “We definitely plan to volunteer for another shift in the future.”
