A British university has confirmed plans to establish a campus in Placer County that would eventually have as many as 6,000 students.
The University of Warwick approved the move Thursday, with the first interim step developing a small number of postgraduate courses taught here. As actual campus facilities are built, the university would add students and courses across several subjects toward the goal of a 6,000-student campus in 2031.
Peter Dunn, a spokesman for Warwick, said the move fits with the university's ethos; 50 years ago, he said, founders established Warwick on what was then farmland in Coventry, England.
"We've transformed that to be one of the top 10 research universities in the country," he said. "To go somewhere like Placer and do something like that again has a lot of attraction."
Warwick's students, and university students of all kinds, Dunn said, see themselves as global citizens who want to address issues such as food security and urban living. With established partnerships and programs in New York City and Australia, he said, it makes sense to continue expanding Warwick's scope to meet students' needs.
As previously suggested, the university would be on 600 donated acres at the center of a planned 1,159-acre development west of Roseville, though the project could eventually be annexed to the city.
