More money proposed for work on Natomas levees

The proposed fiscal 2016 federal budget includes money for the beginnings of levee repairs in Natomas, which would be necessary for new development take place.

President Barack Obama's proposed budget includes $3.5 million for design work on the levees along the Natomas basin's eastern side. That would come in addition to $1.5 million for design work allocated in the work plan for the current fiscal year.

Last summer, Congress and the president signed off on authorization for the full scope of the eastern levee improvements, a step that allowed a building moratorium to be lifted in Natomas in the next few months.

However, Sacramento public works officials have said until the actual improvements are 60 percent complete, new construction will be limited to repairs on damaged structures and residential projects with a final map. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has said it expects the improvements to come in a couple years, with design work happening now.
