An effort to expand Elk Grove’s boundaries for new development is underway again.

Kamilos Cos. and Feletto Development Co. have filed an application with the Sacramento Local Agency Formation Commission to add nearly 1,200 acres south of Kammerer Road to the city’s sphere of influence, a preliminary step toward annexation.

The application, filed earlier this month, suggests developers plan both residential and commercial development, creating up to 20,000 jobs. The property, the application notes, also would be opposite the Southeast Policy Area inside city limits. City of Elk Grove officials have said they want that area to be primarily a jobs center.

Elk Grove Mayor Gary Davis said he didn’t know the full details of the application. But anything that addresses the city’s jobs-housing imbalance is worth looking at, he said.

“Our goal is to master-plan the future of the community,” he said. “From my perspective, we still have a housing-jobs balance that needs to be corrected.”

About 5,000 housing units would be south of the commercial area in the proposed sphere-of-influence expansion. Much of that development would be large-lot, executive-style housing. In addition to Kammerer on the north, the proposed area is bordered by Highway 99 on the east, Eschinger Road on the south and a future extension of McMillan Road and Big Horn Boulevard on the west.
