Santa Clara could get a new downtown-style entertainment district right across the street from the under-construction San Francisco 49ers Stadium.
Hotels, restaurants, retail and residential are all on the table for a 230-acre former landfill that is currently a city-owned golf course.
The City Council on April 9 will consider entering into an exclusive negotiating agreement with The Related Cos., a major global commercial and residential developer, to explore development possibilities at the site.
Mayor Jamie Matthews said the project could be a turning point for the city.
"Santana Row is approximately 45 acres. This, we're looking at 230 acres," said Matthews. "We have a beautiful clear slate for the Related folks to dream, and we want to dream with them."
The huge swath of land is located near the intersection of Tasman Drive and Lafayette Street, and bumps up against property Niners legend Joe Montana is also eyeing for a hotel complex. Montana's development group has yet to submit formal plans to the city, but the Related deal would require both parties to "coordinate site planning efforts," according to a city staff report.
"It could be anything, just given the location," said Lydia Tan, Related's director of Northern California Operations. "There's a large palette to work from."
