After years of submittals, public comment and outcry, revisions, application withdrawals, more public comment and submittals again, The Cannery multi-use project in Davis could be getting closer to moving forward.
Next week, the city of Davis planning commission will see a draft environmental-impact report for the 100-acre project centered on a former tomato cannery site on the north side of the city, along Covell Boulevard.
City community development administrator Katherine Hess said a development application for the project is being forwarded to various city advisory groups before getting approval or denial from the planning commission and City Council, which could come as soon as May or June.
“There have been modifications as it’s moved through the process, and I think the council has even had a couple preliminary discussions about it,” she said. “I’m not sure all the concerns could ever be addressed.”
As now envisioned by site owner ConAgra Inc. and developer The New Home Co., The Cannery would have as many as 600 homes, 15 acres for retail and office or light industry, a green belt at its center and an “urban farm” along its eastern edge for agricultural learning.
