Fear and loathing in homeownership

Achieving the American Dream of homeownership and increasing economic mobility – many recognize that these issues are important, but few realize how closely they are related. Consider that in the next 30 years, collectively, minorities will become the new "minority-majority" in the U.S.

"As we stand on the edge of a massive demographic shift, homeownership rates have fallen to generationally low levels, meaning fewer Americans are benefiting from the economic, financial and social advantages homeownership provides."

As we stand on the edge of a massive demographic shift, homeownership rates have fallen to generationally low levels, meaning fewer Americans are benefiting from the economic, financial and social advantages homeownership provides.

Seems to me like we should be discussing how to address this, so later this month I’ll be joined by prominent elected officials, business and community leaders for a timely bi-partisan conversation on the specific challenges the new "minority-majority" faces in achieving economic mobility at the "Achieving the American Dream" Leadership Forum luncheon on October 27.

Representative Loretta Sanchez (D-CA), former Governor Luis Fortuño (R-PR), and Representative Emanuel Cleaver II (D-MO) will help inform the conversation about possible solutions to addressing the specific challenges the new minority-majority faces in achieving economic mobility.

In advance of this important discussion, I wrote an op-ed, Misplaced Fears about Homeownership, for TheHill.com that combats the naysayers that suggest the housing market will never completely recover and minorities may never fully join the ranks of the American homeowner.

The op-ed is a glimpse into the discussion we’ll have at the "Achieving the American Dream" Leadership Forum on October 27. We’ll be sharing more on homeownership in the near future, so stay tuned.
